The Zibit is a privately help company based in Seattle, with volunteers in New York and Amsterdam. There are many wonderful people behind the making of The Zibit. Some of us have worked on the project for years - others have just donated a few hours here and there building screens or testing the website. Zibit staff members are mostly artists who use technology as an artistic tool, but hope to use it as a means of distributing art back into the everyday lives of people.
History
In 1998, we first had the idea of building a public art gallery where we could show our
work on screens, but financing such a project became extremely difficult. Years later,
the cost of screens and computers came down, and the availability of wi-fi allowed us
to update the screens directly through the internet. We completed the first working
prototype, called 'PicklePost', in 2005, and realized we could open this project to the
public, but needed The Zibit to generate revenue in order to be sustainable.
Thanks to some financial support from BitStar International in 2007, the project is finally up and running in The Netherlands, and we hope to find partners and expand the network of screens very soon.
